Main Tourist Destinations in Spain

The area expands by almost entire Mediterranean coast of Andalusia. It is worth mentioning that Costa del Sol one of the highest numbers of tourist concentration. This is because of its good beaches and bright cities. The major city of the region is Malaga, which is located a few kilometers away from Marbella and Torremolinos.

Two cities that simply need to be visited are Nerja and Ronda. The former is also popular as the "Balcony of Europe", this is because it has a sharp geography and due to the fact that it provides great views on the Mediterranean. In addition, it also features very well preserved prehistoric caves. Ronda is a city located on two hills that are being divided by a deep ravine and the ravine is crossed by several bridges. This structure is 90 meters high and was constructed back in 1761. Other well-known and worth visiting cities of the region are Calahonda, Torre del Mar, El Palo, Fuengirola, San Pedro de Alcántara and Estepona.

These islands are formed from Ibiza, Majorca, Minorca and Formentera, which is located next to the small island of Cabrera. The Balearic Islands represent an archipelago found across the Valencian coast. This location is one of the most popular in Spain, mainly due to a good weather and wonderful beaches. The biggest island of the archipelago is Majorca. Its capital is called Palma.


The second largest island holds the name of Minorca. It is located 40 kilometers from the northeast of Majorca. Its capital in entitled Mahon and its most remarkable monuments are the Consistorial House, the Church of Santa Maria and the Church of San Francisco. Before Mahon, the capital of the island was Ciudadela, which exists till nowadays and where visitors can enjoy the architecture of the medieval Cathedral as well as several palaces and churches.


Ibiza goes third and it is one of the most highly visited areas, this specially concerns young people. Its magnet is in its nightlife; however, the island still keeps a part of its traditional environment. Besides its huge sand beaches found to the south of the capital, the island's landscape is mainly composed of pine groves and orchards.

The Route of Santiago de Compostela, was named a World Heritage site almost 15 years ago. It represented a series of roads going through France and Spain that come together on the city. Thousands of pilgrims went through the Route of Santiago de Compostela during the Middle Ages each year.


Visitors can adore wonderful historic constructions around Plaza do Obradoiro. The main aspect of Santiago de Compostela is the narrow streets that go around the cathedral thus adding a medieval touch to the prehistoric location.


The other locations that are worth paying a visit are the convent of Santo Domingo de Bonaval that houses the museum of Galician ethnography, as well as the Colegiata of the Sar, which is a Romanesque church built in the 12th century.

The region's historical center is found on a rugged peninsula that is being washed on 3 sides by the Tagus River. Its site is quite rocky, which is why it has narrow, winding streets, these having steep gradients and rough surfaces. It is interesting to note that the Romans built a fortress in the same place where the palace is standing today. Back in the 6th century the Visigoths set the capital in Toledo. During the Middle Ages Toledo housed such cultures as Jewish, Christian and Muslim. This was the time when the city's major monument was constructed, the cathedral.
